The Santhigiri Scientific And Industrial Research Institute located at Pothencode conducts research on the role of spirituality in medication.

Research

The research also aims to improve and standardize the quality of Ayurveda and Siddha medicines.

It is also conducting clinical research for the development of new drugs.

Among the major projects taken up by the SSIRI are:

* Developing Indigenous, nature friendly knowledge systems in Health, Medicine &Culture

* Preservation And promotion of medicinal plants &endangered species
* Promoting ethical business practices and socially responsible enterprises
* Nava Arogya Dharma Siddhantham (New Integrated Health Doctrine of Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru)

As a practical application of the SSIRI's work at the grassroots level, Ayurveda and Siddha formulations revitalized by the institute are being distributed free of cost during periodic health camps organized by the Medical Services Division of Santhigiri Ashram. 'Nilavepa Kashayam', an anti-fever Siddha formulation distributed during the 'Karunyam' health camps, was found very effective in tackling the 'Chikungunya' outbreak in Kerala two years ago.

Research

Santhigiri Agro Research Institute: This institute is to be engaged in horticultural and medicinal research through organic farming, developing new hybrid medicinal plants, post-harvest management technologies and protection of endangered medicinal plants. It will also undertake conceptual and literary research to develop food products with high nutrition and immunity protection.

Santhigiri Pharmaceutical Research Institute: Research and Development unit for ensuring that the medicinal raw material and the finished products remain within the parameters prescribed with regard to toxicity and other aspects.

Santhigiri Institute of Medical Research: It is being formed to conduct clinical research in the Santhigiri specialty clinics, panchakarma centres &hospitals focusing on diseases, medicines and methodology.

Santhigiri Institute of Environmental Research: Through this institute, Santhigiri intends to study the effects of agro-forestry in the form of herbal plantations on global warming. The ashram is already engaged in herbal plantations based on agro-forestry.
