Clothes constitute a basic requirement of human beings, protecting human dignity. Even the poorest of the poor cannot be without at least some form of clothing. It was with the intent of fulfilling this basic human need that weaving activities were started in the Ashram in 1979.
Guru gave a mighty 'sankalpam' (prayerful resolve) when the weaving unit was launched and described it as a 'karma' which did not accrue any 'dosham' (fault) to the self.
Santhigiri Handloom and Power loom Unit had a simple beginning. Equipped with four handlooms, the unit initially produced only handloom cloth. Power loom production was added in 1996 with two looms.
The initiative helped the Ashram inmates to learn a basic skill. In the case of handloom this is particularly important as handloom cloth, which is highly suitable for a tropical country like India, has long since given way to cheaper and more durable power loom garments.
The 'Santhigiri Handloom and Powerloom' Unit produces towels, single and double 'dhothis', saris, shawls and bed sheets.
The traditional Kerala handloom saris woven by the unit are very popular.
With women constituting the larger part of the workforce, this unit serves in their economic empowerment and skill development also.
